Earthquake of 6.8 magnitude strikes China’s southwestern Sichuan province, 7 dead

A earthquake tremors were felt today in Luding County, Sichuan province of southwest China. The officials gave this information. The magnitude of the quake, which struck at 12:25 pm local time, was measured at 6.8.

Beijing: A Strong earthquake tremors were felt today in Luding County, Sichuan province of southwest China. The officials gave this information. According to the report, 7 people dead. The magnitude of the quake, which struck at 12:25 pm local time, was measured at 6.8. The epicenter of the earthquake was at 29.59 degree north latitude and 102.08 degree east longitude at a depth of 16 km.

Sichuan province located adjacent to Tibet is prone to quakes. Netizens from as far away as Changsha and Xian said they had felt the quake in Sichuan. Minutes later, a second quake with a magnitude of 4.2 struck the city of Yaan near Luding, according to the centre.

Yaan was hit by a strong earthquake in 2013, killing more than 100 people and injuring thousands. The Tibetan plateau is known to be prone to heavy earthquakes as it sits right over the place where the tectonic Eurasian and Indian plates meet, often colliding with huge force.

Video clips posted on social media showed lights swinging while people rushed out of buildings into the streets. A total of 39,000 people live within a 20-km (12.5 miles) radius of the epicentre and 1.55 million within a 100-km (62 miles) radius, according to state television.
