Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 hits northern California

According to the information given by the US Geological Survey, couple of earthquakes have struck northern California; however, these were low and did no severe harm.

The quake, which was later revised to a 5.7 magnitude, was felt about 6am UTC. There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

Earthquakes of magnitude five and above are not exceptional in seismically active California, while they are been considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage if they hit a heavily populated area directly.

However, once in a blue moon do they create trouble when they strike offshore from the sparsely populated Mendocino coast.
