Earthquake wreaks havoc in Turkey and Syria, death toll rises to 180; Building collapses

Earthquake in Turkey: According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was in Nurdagi city of Gaziantep province. As of now, there is no news of casualties. As of now, there is no news of damage.

Istanbul: Powerful earthquake tremors were felt 23 km east of Nurdagi, Turkey. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 7.8 on the reactor scale. This earthquake also caused huge devastation in Syria. The US Geological Survey said at least 110 people were killed in Turkey and 42 in neighboring Syria.

“516 injuries and 111 deaths recorded in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus,” the ministry said in a statement. Earlier, a local hospital told AFP at least eight were killed in the northern areas controlled by pro-Turkish factions — bringing the country’s total to at least 119 dead.

The earthquake occurred at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of approximately 17.9 kilometers (11 mi). Giving information about this, the US Geological Service said that on Monday, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred near Gaziantep in southern Turkey. Its center has been Nurda, 26 km east of Turkey. This area is near Gaziantep. The population of this area is about 20 lakhs, of which 5 lakhs are Syrian refugees. It is feared that the earthquake may cause loss of life and property on a large scale.

The opposition Syrian Civil Defense in northwest Syria described the situation in the rebel-held area as “catastrophic”, saying many people were buried under the rubble of collapsing buildings, according to the agency. The ‘Syrian Civil Defense’ has asked people to stay in the open space outside the buildings. The earthquake occurred at a time when West Asia is in the grip of snow storm which is expected to continue till Thursday.

It is being said that 23 people have died in Malatya province of Turkey. At the same time, 17 people have died in Sanliurfa, 6 in Diyarbakir and 5 in Osmaniye. Here, there is news of the death of 42 people in Syria. Apart from this, it is being said that tremors have also been felt in Syria and Yemen. Many buildings have also collapsed in Syria.
