The Election Commission announced today that a total of 88.4 lakh individuals with disabilities have been registered in the electoral roll for the upcoming Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly elections in 2024.

Accessibility Measures Ensured

Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized the Commission’s commitment to ensuring accessibility for voters with disabilities. He mentioned that ramps and wheelchairs would be provided at polling booths to facilitate their participation in the electoral process.

Special Provisions for Voters with Disabilities

Mr. Kumar highlighted that voters with a 40 percent benchmark disability would have the option to vote from home. Additionally, transportation facilities would be arranged for people with disabilities to enable them to cast their votes conveniently.

Significant Enrollment Numbers

The Chief Election Commissioner disclosed that the electoral roll includes 88.4 lakh individuals with disabilities, underscoring the importance of inclusive participation in the democratic process.

Upcoming Election Schedule

The Lok Sabha elections for 543 seats will be conducted in seven phases, commencing on April 19. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. In comparison, during the 2019 elections, there were 62.63 lakh registered voters with disabilities out of a total electorate of 91 crore.
