The Election Commission of India (ECI) said in a statement on Friday that law enforcement agencies in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have made “record seizures” of cash, liquor, drugs, and precious metals in the run-up to the assembly elections in the two states. It added that seizures worth Rs 50.28 crore in Himachal Pradesh, which voted on Saturday, represented a five-fold increase over the 2017 figures in 2017.

As per the Election Commission, Gujarat reported seizures of Rs. 71.88 crore just a few days after the announcement of election date. “Similar to that, considerable seizures were made in Himachal Pradesh, totaling 50.28 crores as opposed to 9.03 crores, a five-fold increase.

“Further, if citizens remain vigilant and download the cVigil app, it would be beneficial in curbing money power in the forthcoming elections in two states,” it said. The mobile app, CVigil, helps people record photographs and videos of model code of conduct violations.

A consignment of toys and other accessories valued at Rs 64 crore was confiscated by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence at Gujarat’s Mundra Port. Polling in Gujarat will take place in two phases on December 1 and 5. According to the announcement, two people, including the mastermind, have been detained in this case. The ECI labelled the seizures as “freebies.” In addition, the authorities recovered Rs 66 lakh in cash, 110,000 litres of alcohol valued at Rs 3.86 crore, drugs worth Rs 94 lakh, and precious metals worth Rs 1.86 crore.
