Mumbai: In breaking development in this case, Maharashtra’s Pune Police has arrested six people, including Shiv Sena’s city unit chief Sanjay More, hours after the alleged attack on the car of rebel Shiv Sena MLA and former Maharashtra minister Uday Samant. Besides More, other suspects include Sambhaji Thorve, organizer of Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray’s rally in Katraj, party workers Rajesh Palskar, Chandan Salunkhe, Suraj Lokhande and Rupesh Pawar. Reacting to the police action, More said, “Aditya Thackeray’s public meeting was a huge hit, so the police has taken action against Shiv Sainiks.” Samant was attacked just after the end of Aaditya Thackeray’s rally. The aggressive Shiv Sainiks blocked the road.

A police officer gave this information on Wednesday. Samant’s car was attacked by unidentified persons at a signal in Katraj area of the city at around 9 pm on Tuesday. A video of a mob trying to surround Samant’s vehicle surfaced on social media in which people are also seen raising slogans. A case was registered against more than 15 people under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to murder, at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station late Tuesday night. A source close to the rebel MLA said that Samant, one of the 40 Shiv Sena MLAs who supported Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had come here to attend Shinde’s programs in the district.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Sushma Chavan said, “Shiv Sena’s city unit president Sanjay More is among the five arrested in connection with the attack on Samant’s car.” “We have registered an offense against more than 15 people under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to prevent public servant from discharging his duty) and sections related to rioting,” he said. Samant’s close aide had said that a windshield of the car in which the former minister was traveling was damaged in the incident. At the time when this incident happened, around the same time, a public meeting of Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray was held in the nearby area. Samant later told reporters that the attack on his car was pre-planned.

Condemning this incident, Maharashtra CM Shinde said that this is an act of cowardice. There is no bravery in pelting stones and running away. It is our responsibility to maintain law and order. If anyone tries to disrupt law and order, strict action will be taken against him. Everyone should maintain peace, but still if someone disturbs the peace, the police will take action themselves. He further said that everyone should maintain communal and social harmony in the state. If someone is not doing this then the police will take action against him.
