Ex member of Planning Commission of India , Economist Abhijit Sen passed away at age 72

Professor Abhijit Sen, a leading expert on rural economy and former member of the Planning Commission, passed away on Monday night after a prolonged illness. He was 72 years old.

New Delhi: Professor Abhijit Sen, a leading expert on rural economy and former member of the Planning Commission, passed away on Monday night after a prolonged illness. He was 72 years old. His brother gave this information.

In his academic career spanning more than four decades, he has taught in several reputed institutions. “He suffered a heart attack around 11 PM. We rushed him to the hospital, but it was all over by the time we got there,” said Dr Pronab Sen, his brother.

He was a member of the Planning Commission from 2004-2014 and the Chairman of the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices, 1997-2000. Sen was born into a Bengali family in New Delhi. He went to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya and then St Stephen’s College for a Physics Honours degree. He completed his PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 1981 where he was a member of Trinity Hall.

Apart from his work with the CACP and Planning Commission, Sen’s expertise was regularly tapped by the UNDP, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Asian Development Bank. In 2010, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for public service.
