Taking to twitter, veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “Over 70 years ago, Nehru rejected the proposal to make the Congress flag the flag of India. Now, the BJP’s election symbol has become the official logo for India’s presidency of the G20! While shocking, we know by now that Mr. Modi & BJP won’t lose any opportunity to promote themselves shamelessly.

Kanchan Gupta, senior adviser, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, shot back: “Over 70 years ago, lotus was declared the national flower of India when Jawaharlal Nehru was Prime Minister. Do you @Jairam_Ramesh find that ‘shocking’ too? Btw, successive Congress Govts have issued currency coins with the lotus symbol. And the National Emblem stands atop a lotus.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the G20 presidency’s logo, which features a lotus blossom (which is also the BJP party symbol). Modi further added that the G20 will provide a platform for harmony in the world. Meanwhile, the seven petals of the lotus are symbols for the globe’s seven continents and its seven musical notes.

“I extend my congratulations to my countrymen on the historic G20 Presidency of India. Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam is the emblem of India’s global compassion. Lotus depicts India’s cultural legacy and belief in uniting the world, he said.

“The lotus still blooms no matter the circumstances,” Prime Minister Modi declared. “India’s presidency comes at a time when the world is in crisis and chaos.”
