New Delhi: Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of Alt News, has received some solace as the Supreme Court granted him interim bail on July 8, 2022. Earlier, the Sitapur Police in Uttar Pradesh filed a FIR against Mr. Zubair for his offensive religious statements.
The Uttar Pradesh Police had registered a case against the fact checker because of Zubair’s use of insulting words for the mahants of a religious location. This offended the religious sensibilities of the community.
Mr. Zubair had made a request to stay the inquiry into the “absurd” allegations and subsequently nullify the Sitapur FIR.
Mr. Zubair will have to remain in judicial custody due to a separate FIR registered by the Delhi Police. This case had not come up before the Supreme Court. The court is only concerned with the case registered in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur.
The Bench cleared the air that Mr. Zubair would not post any tweets or tamper with any type of evidence, whether it be electronic or not.
The investigation and evidence seizure in the Sitapur case will not be hindered by the order.
The matter will now be heard by a regular bench when the court resumes, according to the Vacation Bench.
