Farmers’ Protest Escalates SKM Blames Govt for Farmer’s Death. Subhkaran Singh, the first farmer to die in the clashes, succumbed to a head injury. The circumstances surrounding his death are under scrutiny, with conflicting reports about the nature of the projectile causing the fatal injury.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha placed the blame squarely on the government, declaring it “solely responsible for the present crisis and casualty.”

Political Responses

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann vowed exemplary punishment for the officers responsible for the youth’s death.
Opposition leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi, criticized the central government’s handling of the protest, with Gandhi accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of arrogance.

Escalation at Khanauri
Haryana Police reported that protesting farmers set fire to chaff mixed with chili powder, attacking security forces with stones and sharp weapons.

Toxic smoke from the chili-laced straw caused breathing problems and poor visibility for the police, leading to clashes.

Police Response

Tear gas shells were fired to disperse protesters advancing towards concrete barriers at Khanauri and Shambhu border points.
A sub-inspector of Haryana Police, posted at the Tohana border, passed away as the situation escalated.

Internet Services Ban

The Haryana government extended the ban on mobile internet and bulk SMS services in seven districts until February 23 to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumors on social media.

Transportation Challenges

Road blockages since February 13 have severely disrupted road connectivity between Chandigarh and Delhi, leading to fully booked trains until February 25. Commuters are forced to explore expensive alternatives like flights.

Protesters’ Plans

To protest Subhkaran Singh’s death, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) members plan to block major roads across Haryana for two hours on Thursday.

Union Agriculture Minister’s Appeal

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda urged considering the interests of farmers nationwide while dealing with the protesting farmers’ demands. He expressed confidence in finding a solution through negotiations.

As tensions escalate, the farmers’ protest continues to draw attention, and the tragic death of a protester adds a new dimension to the ongoing standoff between the government and farmers.
