New Delhi: Fast bowler Pat Cummins has been given the command of Australia’s ODI team. Recently, Aaron Finch announced his retirement in the 50 over format. Cummins will be Australia’s 27th ODI captain. Under his leadership, Australia will take part in the next ODI World Cup. Cummins also has the command of Australia’s Test team in his hands. The desire of captaincy was expressed by veteran player David Warner but his name was not considered.

Cummins is about to become the first fast bowler to captain Australia’s men’s team in limited overs. Among the bowlers, only late leg-spinner Shane Warne has taken charge of Australia. He captained Australia in 11 matches in the 1990s.

After Finch’s retirement, David Warner and Steve Smith were considered the top contenders for captaincy. However, Warner was out of the race as the ban on his captaincy for life is still in force. To make him the captain, the board would have to change its guidelines first. George Bailey, the head of the Australia cricket team’s selection committee, said, “Pat has done a wonderful job since taking over as the captain of the Test team.”

Cummins became the captain of the Test team in December last year, before the Ashes series in December 2021, Cummins got the command of Australia’s Test team. Tim Paine had to resign from the captaincy after a dispute. Cummins, an important member of the Australian cricket team for 11 years, is the main bowler of the Kangaroo team in all three formats. Under his leadership, the Australian team managed to win the Ashes series 3-0.

After this, the team won 1-0 against Pakistan under the leadership of Cummins. However, the Australian team had to play a 1-1 series draw on Sri Lankan soil. Cummins has captained 9 Test matches so far in which the team was successful in winning 5 matches. One was defeated and three matches were drawn.
