Fierce fire in Dhaka’s shopping center, fire brigade and army trying to control it

A massive fire broke out at a popular shopping center in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka in the early hours of Saturday. After the fire was reported, 28 units of the fire service as well as teams of the Army, Navy and Air Force are engaged in controlling the fire.

Newmarket police station chief Shafikul Gani Saboo said the blaze broke out on the second floor of the New Supermarket, a shopping center located between Newmarket and Dhaka College, at around 4.45 a.m. and quickly spread to other floors. He told that the Army, Navy and Air Force teams are helping in extinguishing the fire.

Shahjahan Sikdar, assistant deputy director of the fire service, said the cause of the fire was not immediately known and no casualty has been reported so far.

A few days ago there was a fire in the clothes market

According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, the shop owner rushed to the market after hearing the news of the fire and tried to save as much as possible. Many of them are said to have burst into tears as they watched their shops go up in flames. At least 23 people were killed in a blast at a market in central Dhaka last month.

Saturday’s incident comes days after a massive fire gutted thousands of shops in a popular textile market here. Leaky gas cylinders, faulty air conditioners and faulty electrical wiring are frequent incidents of building fires and explosions in Bangladesh.
