New Delhi: Football’s premier governing body FIFA on Tuesday decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect for colluding with third parties and affecting football operations in the country. The suspension had been in place for a long time and FIFA said that the decision to ban the AIFF was taken unanimously. The decision has been taken due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.
“The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect for undue influence of third parties, which is a serious violation of the rules of FIFA.” The body said in its statement. As a result of the ban, the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held from 11-30 October will be postponed. FIFA said the future of the tournament would be decided in due course and that the matter could be referred to the Council of Bureaus if needed.
FIFA said that the suspension will be lifted only if the Football Federation of India works together. “Once the order to constitute a Committee of Administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee is revoked, the suspension will be lifted and the AIFF Administration will gain full control over the day-to-day affairs of the AIFF.” FIFA added.
After the Supreme Court of India directed the AIFF to hold elections in the national federation, FIFA issued its warning. However, a strongly worded comment was made earlier this month by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), in association with FIFA. “The AIFF was to convene a special general assembly in the first week of August 2022 to approve the new law working with FIFA, the AFC and the Indian football community. Unfortunately, we have been informed that the Supreme Court hearing took place yesterday. The AIFF’s position reportedly resulted in deviations in the above roadmap.”
It has been further stated, “If it is considered true, then it will put mutual understanding in danger which was still displayed on further steps.”
Ban from FIFA is expected to be devastating for Indian football because national teams will not be able to participate in any international tournament. ISL and I-League Clubs which are ready to participate in the tournament powered by FIFA will also be stopped by participating in them. However, the most heartbreaking news will be canceled for the host team for the Under-17 Women’s World Cup. This woman can do 10-15 years and back.
