About five tonnes of tomatoes imported from neighboring Nepal will soon reach India and will be retailed in Uttar Pradesh from Thursday at a subsidized rate of Rs 50 per kg, cooperative body NCCF said on Wednesday.
Tomatoes are going to be cheap in Uttar Pradesh. About 5 tonnes of tomatoes imported from neighboring Nepal are in transit and will be retailed in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday (August 17) at a subsidized rate of Rs 50 per kg. The National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Limited (NCCF) gave this information on Wednesday.
Retail sale will be done at subsidized rates in UP
NCCF Managing Director Anees Joseph Chandra said, “We have contracted to import 10 tonnes of tomatoes from Nepal. Out of this, 3-4 tonnes were distributed in Uttar Pradesh yesterday. About 5 tonnes is in transit and will be retailed tomorrow in UP at concessional rates. He added that the imported tomatoes cannot be sold in other parts of India due to their short shelf life. In Uttar Pradesh, both imported and locally procured tomatoes are being sold through mobile vans at select locations along with stationary outlets.
Arrival of new tomato crop starts in wholesale markets
The managing director of NCCF said that imported tomatoes cannot be sold in other parts of India as it has a short shelf life. In Uttar Pradesh, both imported and locally procured tomatoes are being sold through mobile vans along with stationary shops at select locations.
He said that tomatoes procured from major producing states of the country in Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan are being sold at a concessional rate of Rs 50 per kg.
When asked about further import of tomatoes from Nepal, Joseph Chandra said, “Imports from Nepal will be done in a gradual manner as domestic arrivals have started in mandis of some states.” The arrival of the new crop has started in the wholesale mandis and the prices are also coming down.
