Former ISI chief Lt Syed Asim Munir appointed as Pakistan’s new army chief

Lieutenant-General Asim Munir will replace Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who is retiring later this month. General Bajwa remained on this post for six years.

Islamabad: Amid political upheaval in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has selected the country’s new army chief on Thursday. According to sources, Pakistan’s Information Minister informed on Twitter that Shehbaz Sharif has nominated Lieutenant-General Asim Munir as Pakistan’s new army chief.

Aseem Munir will replace General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who is retiring at the end of this month. General Bajwa held the post of Pakistan’s army chief for six years.

Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has confirmed this. He informed that PM Shehbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff. The Information Minister wrote on Twitter that Munir has been made the new chief of the country’s mighty army. He said that Munir would take over from the outgoing General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Who Is Lt General Syed Asim Munir
Lt General Syed Asim Munir was promoted to the rank of a two-star general in September 2018. He entered the service through the Officers Training School programme in Mangla, and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment, a report in Dawn said.

Lt General Munir is a close aide of General Bajwa and he commanded troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under the outgoing army chief. Bajwa was then Commander X Corps.

In 2017, Lt General Munir was appointed as director general of Military Intelligence. He was made the Inter-Services Intelligence chief in October next year. However, his term as ISI chief was short-lived and was replaced by Lt Gen Faiz Hamid within eight months under the government of former prime minister Imran Khan.

Lt Gen Munir was the posted as Gujranwala Corps commander for two years before being moved to the General Headquarters as the quartermaster general.
