New Delhi: On Tuesday, Former Jharkhand Governor and tribal leader Droupadi Murmu has been named as the BJP’s choice for the post of President. BJP president J P Nadda announced her name at a press conference following a meeting of the party top brass.
At a press conference J P Nadda futher said, “For the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. We announce Draupadi Murmu as NDA’s candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections.”
PM Modi, party president JP Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and others were present at the meeting. Elections to choose the next President will be held on July 18, the counting on July 21. The new President will take oath on July 25, the Election Commission has said.
Shortly after her name was announced, taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
Millions of people, especially those who have experienced poverty and faced hardships, derive great strength from the life of Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her understanding of policy matters and compassionate nature will greatly benefit our country.

Mr Patnaik today tweeted his congratulations to Ms Murmu.
