Former lawyer Mukul Rohatgi set to become Attorney General for India again

Former lawyer Mukul Rohatgi is set to become the Attorney General for country again. He will start his second term from October 1. Rohatgi will replace KK Venugopal whose term ends on September 30.

New Delhi: Former lawyer Mukul Rohatgi is set to be appointed as next or 14th Attorney General of the country. He will start his second term from October 1. Rohatgi will replace KK Venugopal whose term ends on September 30. Rohatgi was earlier also appointed as the Attorney General in June 2014 and served till June 2017. Venugopal had recently indicated to the Supreme Court that he would not hold office after September 30.

He will be taking the mantle from ace lawyer KK Venugopal, 91, who expressed his inability to continue after September 30 when his third extension at the helm is getting over. At the end of June this year, the tenure of AG Venugopal was extended by three months.

During a hearing recently, Venugopal indicated that he might not continue as the top law officer after the completion of his present term. The Attorney General is the country’s top law officer and chief legal advisor to the central government. Those who represent the central government in important matters in the Supreme Court. The Attorney General is the first law officer of the government.
