Mumbai: On Saturday, Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) S. Venkitaramanan and a member of the Indian Administrative Service, passed away due to a brief illness. He was 92 years old. Venkitaramanan is survived by two daughters, including Girija Vaidyanathan, who was a former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.
Mumbai: On Saturday, Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) S. Venkitaramanan and a member of the Indian Administrative Service, passed away due to a brief illness. He was 92 years old.
Venkitaramanan is survived by two daughters, including Girija Vaidyanathan, who was a former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu. S Venkitaramanan was the 18th RBI Governor who served for a time period of two years, that is, from 1990 to 1992.
Prior to this, he served as Finance Secretary from 1985 to 1989 in the Ministry of Finance.
Born in 1931 in Nagercoil, which was at the time a part of the princely state of Travancore, he was the Governor of RBI from 22. As Advisor to the Government of Karnataka prior to his appointment as RBI Governor.
Describing Venkitaramanan’s tenure, RBI said on its website, “During his tenure the country faced external sector-related difficulties. His efficient management helped the country overcome the balance of payments crisis.”
It added, “During his tenure, India adopted the IMF’s stabilization programme, where the rupee devalued and an economic reform program began.”
