According to information, citing the Central Clinical Hospital, has reported that Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died on Tuesday evening after a serious and prolonged illness. Mikhail Gorbachev was the last leader of the United Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). He was a passionate Soviet leader who wanted to reform communist rule on the lines of democratic principles by giving freedom to citizens.

In 1989, when pro-democracy protests erupted in the Soviet Union of communist Eastern Europe, Gorbachev refrained from using force. He recognized the policy of Glasnost, or freedom of speech, which had been severely curtailed during the earlier regime.

Gorbachev also started a program of economic reform called perestroika or restructuring. Which was necessary because the Soviet economy was suffering from both hidden inflation and a lack of supply. Cultural freedom was given to the press and the artistic community during his time. On becoming general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party in 1985, aged just 54, he had set out to revitalise the system by introducing limited political and economic freedoms, but his reforms spun out of control.

His policy of ‘glasnost’ – free speech – allowed previously unthinkable criticism of the party and the state, but also emboldened nationalists who began to press for independence in the Baltic republics of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and elsewhere.

Gorbachev initiated radical reforms aimed at reducing party control of the government. Notably, thousands of political prisoners were released during his rule. He is recognized for the success of the nuclear disarmament agreement with the US, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. According to The New York Times, Gorbachev’s first five years in power were marked by significant achievements. He presided over an arms deal with the US. Which eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons for the first time, and began the withdrawal of most Soviet strategic nuclear weapons from Eastern Europe.
