Bengaluru: Four labourers from Bihar were killed and the same number of injured due to the collapse of a compound wall of a private company’s warehouse. The firm had constructed a temporary shed at Thirumalashettyhalli, near Kadugodi. According to reports, the wall fell between 1 and 2 am on Thursday amid heavy rain, killing four workers.
They were employees of the apartment building owned by Sowparnika on Soukya Road close to Thirumalashettyhalli. In close proximity to the warehouse’s compound wall, the firm had constructed temporary sheds.
Those who were killed in the accident have been identified as Nilesh Kumar Saday, 24, Shyam Kumar Saday, 22, Manoj Kumar Saday, 25, and Mandu Das. All of them were from Madhubani district in Bihar. The names of the injured labourers are Dileep, Durgesh, Shambu Mandal, and Surendar Mandal. Meanwhile, Shivashankar Saday escaped unhurt. In fact, Shivashankar and Manoj are brothers. They were brought to the city by a contractor for painting work five days ago.
Overall, nine people were sleeping under the shed. One of them raised his voice and alerted others before fleeing from the spot. All of them failed to run out and were caught under the debris, in which three men lost their lives on the spot. “Police shifted five people to a hospital where one person succumbed to injuries,” said ML Purushotham, additional superintendent of police (Bengaluru district).
The police have registered a case of negligence against the proprietors of the construction company.
MTB Nagaraj, the Minister for small-scale industries and municipal administration, visited the spot and vowed that labourers should be provided better accommodation as per labour law. The Sowparnika company is known for constructing tall apartments. But it failed to provide adequate shelter to laborers, which led to the tragedy.
