Four-member probe panel set up to probe fatal Haryana bus crash on Eid that kills 6 kids; 3 arrested

Mahendragarh/Haryana: In a horrific accident unfolded yesterday in which six children were killed and around 20 injured after their school bus overturned in Haryana’s Mahendragarh. The police have arrested three people, including the school’s principal, and a show-cause notice has been issued to the private school to explain why it was open despite it being a holiday on account of Eid.

Former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala asked why the school was functioning despite a nationwide holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. He also sought a probe into reports of the driver of the bus being intoxicated. The driver of the bus was apprehended and the District Education Officer Sunil Dutt and Pradeep Kumar, Assistant Secretary, Regional Transport Office, Mahendragarh, have been suspended with immediate effect, hours after the accident. The Principal and the Director of the school have also been detained.

The occurrence occurred as the driver of the bus was drunk driving. The bus was owned by GL Public School, and its fitness certificate had expired in 2018. State Education Minister Seema Trikha has said that an investigation has been launched to find out why the school was open on holiday. She reaffirmed that a show-cause notice has been served and that the school should have been closed today.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahendra Rana said in Hindi, “A case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and others. Sections of the Motor Vehicle Act have also been applied because the fitness certificate was not valid. The driver, Dharmendra, the principal, Dipti, and a staff member, Hoshiyar Singh, who was a secretary and looked after the buses and other such matters, have been arrested”

“A medical test has confirmed that alcohol was present in the driver’s bloodstream,” Mr Rana added.

To a question on local residents claiming that, half an hour before the accident, some of them had stopped the bus and informed the school authorities that the driver was drunk, the police officer said the statement of the person who made the claim has been recorded. He also revealed that a challan had been issued against the bus recently.

State Education Minister Seema Trikha said an inquiry is being conducted to establish why classes were being held in the school on Eid, which is a holiday.

“The school should not have been open today. A show-cause notice has been issued and, apart from that, we have taken self-affidavits from private schools. The schools will have to provide an affidavit stating that transport vehicles used by them are following the transport rules,” she said.
