New Delhi: The Indian women’s boxing squad has been selected on Saturday after the fierce selection trials held in New Delhi. The toast of the nation and reigning world champion, Nikhat Zareen, and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, Lovlina Borgohain, along with two more pugilists, are ready to represent India at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held from July 28 to August 8.

Meanwhile, boxing legend MC Mary Kom made a sad exit from the Commonwealth Games 2022 national selection trials. She could not continue her bout in the 48kg semi-final against Nitu due to a knee injury on Friday.

In the trial events, Nikhat Zareen, the current world champion, defeated Minakshi of Haryana by a 7-0 unanimous decision. Lovlina didn’t leave any stone unturned as she out-classed her Railways nemesis Pooja by an identical margin.

Nitu (48kg) and Jasmine (60kg) were the two other boxers who have confirmed their tickets for the upcoming multi-sport event starting in Birmingham next month.

During the fight, Nikhat was in full control throughout her bout, punching over her opponent with great authority. Her feet’ movement in the ring was like a cheetah.

A two-time former youth world champion, Nitu got past 2019 world boxing silver medallist Manju Rani by 5-2. Both the pugilists were in severe form in the ring. But in the end, Nitu just managed to win the hard-fought bout. The Haryana boxer has been performing admirably this year. Nitu bagged the gold medal at the Strandja Memorial tournament earlier this year. It was a tearing omission for Manju Rani.

Jasmine, the 2021 Asian youth boxing championship bronze medallist, surprisingly overpowered Praveen Hooda, the bronze medalist at the world championships.

Nitu (48 kg), Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Jasmine (60 kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (70 kg) will lead the country in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

It is expected that these four boxers are competitive, and they are hot favourites to bring home medals from the Commonwealth Games.
