Darjeeling: Gorkha Janamukti Morcha protestors broke out fresh clashes with the Bengal police in Darjeeling today as they pelted stones at security personnel who hit back by firing teargas shells. The protest began after the government of West Bengal announced an inclusion of Bengali as an important language in schools.
Amidst the situation prevailing in Darjeeling, Vikram Rai, son of Darjeeling MLA Amar Rai and media manager of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), was detained by the police yesterday and also the house of the Assistant General Secretary (GJM), Binay Tamang, was raided by the police.
Criticizing the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for raiding his office, GJM chief Bimal Gurung stated: “The administration unlawfully attacked my house and our party office on instructions from Mamata Banerjee. Such attack is dangerous for democracy. Our party members and opposition parties will reply to that atrocity.”
