Google celebrates the 100th anniversary of Turkey’s Republic Day

Google honors the 100th anniversary of Turkey’s Republic Day with a Doodle featuring the Second Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which served as the parliament until 1924. This iconic location is where President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk delivered his influential 6-day speech outlining his beliefs in democracy, secularism, and national unity in the Great Hall. It’s also where Atatürk implemented various new laws and reforms.

On Republic Day, people in Turkey visit Anıtkabir in Ankara to pay their respects to Atatürk, the founding father of the republic, and lay wreaths at his mausoleum. Additionally, celebratory gatherings take place in stadiums and on public streets, often featuring evening parades.

The Second Grand National Assembly of Turkey is now a museum, housing personal items that provide insight into Atatürk’s life, including pens, glasses, clothing, and even his morning coffee cup.

Notably, this centenary celebration occurs with somewhat subdued festivities, partly due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan leads the commemorations, emphasizing the accomplishments of the ruling Islamic-rooted party, which has governed Turkey since 2002.

Both Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and President Erdogan hold significant roles in Turkey’s history. Ataturk is revered for his role in liberating the country from invading forces and shaping a modern, secular nation out of the remnants of the Ottoman Empire following World War I. Turkey transformed into a Western-oriented nation, separating religion from state institutions and uniting various ethnic groups. Over time, it became a key member of the NATO defense alliance and a symbol of democratic aspirations in the Middle East.
