New Delhi: Google has declared that it will lay off 12,000 workers worldwide. Affected Google staff members in the US have already gotten an email, and affected staff members overseas will be informed soon.
According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the company undertook a “rigorous assessment across product categories,” to make sure that present responsibilities are in line with the company’s primary priorities. It is uncertain which department is most affected by the latest round of mass layoffs.
The company will facilitate a smooth “transition” for the affected employees, according to Pichai’s letter. Employees will be paid by Google for the whole notice period (a minimum of 60 days). It says that it would offer a severance package starting at 16 weeks’ salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google.
According to their contracts, entitled employees will also earn bonuses and healthcare benefits. While outside the US, Google employees will be given severance compensation in accordance with their contracts and local guidelines.
Google will host a town hall meeting with employees on Monday, according to Pichai. It says in his letter, “We are almost 25 years old, so we will inevitably experience challenging economic cycles.” These are crucial times to narrow our focus, redesign our cost structure, and focus our resources—talent and money—on our top goals.
The news of huge layoffs is regrettable. Google stopped hiring in the middle of 2022, and Pichai even said that employees weren’t working hard and shouldn’t confuse enjoyment with money. Pichai had said, “We don’t always get to choose the macroeconomic conditions.”
Apart from Google, other tech giants such as Meta and Twitter have also opened exit doors to thousands of workers due to the weakening of the global economy.
