In an alarming case from Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj, a woman took advantage of the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme by marrying her own brother when the original groom failed to appear.

Preeti Yadav found herself in a bind when the groom, Ramesh Yadav, didn’t show up for their scheduled wedding during a mass marriage event on March 5. Persuaded by middlemen, she resorted to marrying her brother, Krishna, to secure the scheme’s benefits.

To prevent future occurrences, the Uttar Pradesh government plans to link Aadhaar details of newly-wed couples and provide marriage certificates instantly during the program. These measures aim to curb fraudulent activities and ensure the scheme benefits reach deserving recipients.
