Surat: In an unfortunate incident, at least four sanitation workers from Bihar died of asphyxiation due to inhaling toxic fumes after entering a septic tank at a dyeing unit in Surat’s Palsana locality, the police have said.
The incident unfolded at a factory on Palsana-Katodara road on Tuesday evening.
Initial reports indicate that two workers fell unconscious during the process of cleaning the septic tank, and two others who tried to rescue them too fainted, said an official of Pansala police station.
Unfortunately, all four individuals succumbed to the dangerous conditions within the tank. After being swiftly extracted, they were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The labourers were from Bihar and their identities were being ascertained, he added.
“Four workers had gone to clean the (septic) tank and died due to suffocation. Further investigation is underway. We are questioning seniors of the factory…All the four deceased are the residents of Bihar…,” HL Rathore, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP), Bardoli Division, told while talking to media.
“We received a call at 6:30 am on Wednesday following which a team reached the spot and found that four workers had allegedly died due to suffocation,” an official added.
According to the official, they are investigating the number of times the tank is cleaned annually. The occurrence occurred under the ambit of Palsana police station in Surat. The official said other officials of the factory are being questioned.
