Ahmedabad: A court in Gujarat has sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment in a 2013 rape case. Sessions Court Judge DK Soni had convicted Asaram in this case on Monday and reserved his decision on the punishment till Tuesday. In this case, the court has acquitted six other accused including Asaram’s wife due to lack of evidence. Let me tell you, in the year 2013, a woman had filed a rape case against Asaram.
The 81-year-old is currently lodged in a Jodhpur jail, where he is serving life sentence in another case of raping a minor girl at his ashram in Rajasthan in 2013.
The court on Monday convicted Asaram in a case registered in 2013 for raping a woman disciple, who hailed from Surat, on several occasions from 2001 to 2006 when she was living at his ashram at Motera near Ahmedabad.
According to the FIR lodged at the Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad, Asaram allegedly raped the woman several times between 2001 and 2006. According to the woman, Asaram carried out the incident at his ashram outside the city. Special Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar said on Monday that the court has accepted the prosecution’s case and Asaram has been booked under Section 376 2(c). (rape), 377 (unnatural offences) and illegal detention under other provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
