Gujarat elections: PM Modi attacks Congress and calls Bharat Jodo Yatra power march

Surendranagar: The forthcoming Gujarat election is around the corner, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi intensified his criticism of the Congress on Monday, saying that its Bharat Jodo Yatra is a yatra for power rather than a padayatra (foot march). Currently, Rahul Gandhi is leading his party’s largest public outreach, from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.

When social activist Medha Patkar, who led the Narmada Bachao Aandolan to stop residents from being displaced owing to the construction of a dam in Gujarat, joined the yatra, Modi accused Congress of insulting her once more.

A day after Patkar joined the Maharashtra leg of the yatra, Modi on Sunday criticised the Congress and Rahul Gandhi for accompanying “an anti-Narmada campaigner” on the walk.

Addressing a rally in Surendranagar, in the Saurashtra area of Gujarat, Modi listed the various insults Congress has hurled at her. Congress must now move on and talk about the BJP’s development efforts in Gujarat during the previous two decades, according to Modi.

He said that the Congress had kept the residents of Surendranagar, an opposition party stronghold, without adequate drinking water facilities for 40 years. “At this time, you are participating in your yatra hand-in-hand with those [Patkar] who opposed the Narmada Scheme.” The Gujarat voters are set to punish you in the upcoming polls in the state.

According to Modi, the padyatra participants are unaware of the cotton and groundnut farming in Surendranagar.

Under the Jyotigram Yojana, 24-hour electricity and irrigation water from the Narmada have been made available for the farmers and the dairy sector in Gujarat, which has been vibrant in the last decade, he said.

“Show me a single Congress leader who thought of bringing Narmada waters to Surendranagar through the Sauni Yojana.” Will you let them rule? They do not care about the people of Gujarat, Modi said.
