Gujarat: In a tragic incident, 91 Dead as British-era suspension bridge collapses in Morbi

After the Morbi accident, three teams of NDRF have been sent to the spot. Along with this, teams of Navy and Air Force have also been dispatched to the spot.

Gandhinagar: in a tragic incident, So far 91 people have died and a large number of people have been injured as british-era suspension bridge collapses in Morbi, Gujarat. After this accident, NDRF teams have been sent to the spot. Along with this, teams of Navy and Air Force have been sent to Morbi. Marine commandos have been sent for rescue and relief work.

Around 500 people fell into the Machhu river when the cable suspension bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Morbi at around 6.30 pm on Sunday. 91 people have died in the accident. Their bodies have been shifted to Morbi’s Civil Hospital. More than 50 women and children were among the dead. Whereas, more than 70 people are injured. The search for 100 people is still on. PM Narendra Modi is currently in Kevadiya, it is being told that he will also go to Morbi. A 5-member SIT has been formed to investigate the cause of the accident.

Garuda commandos of the Air Force have been sent for the rescue operation. Along with this, the Gujarat government has also issued helpline number 02822-243300. After reaching Morbi, local MLA and minister in Gujarat government Brijesh Merja said that more than 80 people have died so far. More than 25 children are among the dead.

This video going viral on social media is being told a day before the accident. In this video you will see that a large number of people are standing on the bridge and having fun. In the video, the bridge is seen completely packed and the presence of more than 100 people is clearly visible there.

Several teams of NDRF-SDRF left for rescue

Gujarat CMO informed that 3 squads of NDRF with 50 personnel of Indian Navy, 2 columns of Army for rescue and relief operations with 30 personnel of IAF and 7 teams of Fire Brigade with advanced equipment from Rajkot, Jamnagar, Diu and Surendranagar left for Morbi with 3 squads of SDRF and 2 squads of State Reserve Police are also reaching Morbi for rescue and relief operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Gujarat, tweeted, “I am deeply saddened by the tragedy at Morbi. Talked to Gujarat Chief Minister Shri @Bhupendrapbjp and other officials about this. Relief and rescue operations are going on in full swing and all necessary assistance is being provided to the affected”.

With the bridge collapse coming ahead of the assembly elections in the state, the Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party have blamed the BJP for the tragedy. The Congress has demanded an investigation.

The focus right now needs to be on relief and rescue but a probe is required and accountability needs to be fixed, said AAP’s Atishi. “Gujarat has just recovered from the hooch tragedy in which over 100 (people) died and now this. The Gujarat government has to answer,” she added.

The state government will provide ₹ 4 lakh to each family that has lost a loved one. ₹ 50,000 will be given to each injured person, tweeted Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. An ex gratia of ₹ 2 lakh has been announced from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the victims.
