Gujarat: A Gujarat court on Thursday, May 5, sentenced MLA Jignesh Mevani and 9 others to three months in jail in a 2017 case for taking out an Azadi march. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on all the 10 convicts.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate JA Parmar held Jignesh Mevani and nine others, including NCP functionary Reshma Patel and some members of Jignesh Mevani’s Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, guilty of being part of an unlawful assembly, under section 143 of the Indian Penal Code.
The Mehsana ‘A’ division police had lodged an FIR under IPC section 143 against Jignesh Mevani and others for taking out the ‘Azadi march’ from Mehsana to Dhanera in Banaskantha district without permission in July 2017.
Of the total 12 accused named in the FIR, one had died, while one is still absconding.
Last month, Mevani was arrested twice by the Assam Police on various charges. He was arrested from Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on April 20 and flown to Guwahati the next morning following a complaint filed by a BJP leader in Assam’s Kokrajhar district over a purported tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He was then granted bail in the second case and on Saturday he completed pending bail formalities at a court in Kokrajhar. Mevani was granted permission by the court to leave the Assam town as one of his bail conditions was to stay within the limits of the court’s jurisdiction.
