IAF officials said the first Indian Air Force squadron of C-295 transport aircraft will also be based in Vadodara. According to Defense Ministry officials, 96 percent of the work that Airbus does at its facility in Spain will be done at the Indian facility and the electronic warfare suite for the aircraft will be done by the public sector Bharat Electronics (BEL).

The deal for the purchase of 56 C-295 Transport military transport aircraft with Spanish company Airbus Dilrh Paes was finalized on September 24 last year. At that time it was decided that within 48 months of the signing of the contract, the Spanish company would supply 16 aircraft in flying mode to India. The remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured by the Tata consortium in India.

The setting up of a manufacturing plant for military aircraft at Dodra is the second major announcement for Gujarat in the defense sector after the recent five-day DefExpo in Gandhinagar. Earlier in September, Vedanta Limited had selected Gujarat for its semiconductor project. Which was the first major step in the 520 billion joint venture with Foxconn of Taiwan. The C-295 will have this capacity

The C-295 is capable of carrying a 9-day payload or up to 71 soldiers or 44 papers. It is a highly versatile airlifter aircraft that specializes in take-off and landing from semi-prepared surfaces even in mountainous terrain. Defense Secretary said, therefore it will be deployed in the border areas of India.
