Guwahati: Guwahati Police claimed to have busted an interstate drug cartel, saying it seized five smugglers from Manipur, including two women. They also sized heroin worth about Rs 2.5 crore. A senior police officer said another person, believed to be an associate of the smugglers, has also been arrested.

Telling about this incident, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said that teams were formed on Saturday night from various places in the city to nab them. He said that in the first operation, three drug smugglers from Manipur in which two from Imphal West and one from Senapati district were caught near a private hospital in Dispur area after receiving a tip-off.
Barah said, “The team recovered 24 soap boxes filled with suspected heroin, weighing approximately 280 grams, from their possession. Their interrogation is ongoing and necessary legal action is being initiated.” In the second case, the West District Police in Guwahati caught a man when he came to buy heroin packets from two female drug smugglers from Manipur.
He added, “With their help, we caught the women from a hotel in Lalmati and during the search recovered 20 packets of soap containing heroin and Rs 22,400 in cash from them”.After interrogating the two women, police raided another hotel on TRP Road in Machhakova and recovered Rs 1,50,000 in cash from a room. The police commissioner said, “Efforts are on to nab other associates.”
