New Delhi: November 14 not only marks the birth anniversary of the first prime minister of independent India but it is also celebrated as the Children’s Day every year in the loving memory of ‘Chacha Nehru’ who advocated for child rights and the right to education.

Interestingly, Children’s Day was decided to be celebrated on Nehru’s birth anniversary after his death in 1964, before that, Children’s Day was observed on November 20 (the date observed as Universal Children’s Day by the United Nations).

Nehru, who was fondly known as ‘Chacha Nehru’ among children, had a special bond with them. He advocated for children to have all-rounded education. He also established the Children’s Film Society India in 1955 to create indigenous cinema solely for kids.

His love and affection for children could be witnessed by the humbleness he used to talk to them. At public gatherings, he would throw his marigold garlands to them and would sit cross-legged on the floor to listen to happenings at their school or tales their grandmothers had told them. Jawaharlal Nehru often wore a red rose on his jacket popularly after a child pinned one on him.

On this special day lets remember the bond and love he shared for the kids and what ‘Chacha Nehru’ said for these little angles:

Jawaharlal Nehru’s quotes on Children’s Day

-“I may not have time for adults, but I have enough time for children.”

-“The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country.”

-“Children do not think of differences amongst themselves.”

-“Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow. “

-“As they grow up, unfortunately, their natural freedom is often eclipsed by teaching and behaviour of elders. At school, they learn many things, which are no doubt useful, but they gradually forget that essential thing to be human and kind, playful and make life richer for ourselves and others.”

-“The vast army of children across the world, outwardly different kinds of clothes, and yet so very like another. If you bring them together, they play or quarrel, but even their quarrel is some kind of play.”
