Hardik Pandya replaces 5-time winner Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain in IPL 2024

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians officially have made a major leadership change ahead of the 2024 edition of the IPL with Hardik Pandya being appointed as the new captain. The 29-year-old has succeeded Rohit Sharma, who is one of the most decorated captains in the IPL history with five titles. Hardik Pandya has replaced Rohit Sharma.

Hardik was led Gujarat Titans in the last two seasons, including a title in 2022 and a final berth in 2023, made a move back to the Mumbai Indians in a pre-auction trade and will continue to be the captain but for a franchise, where his IPL career began eight years ago. Indian all-rounder was retained by Ahmedabad-based IPL franchise during the IPL 2024 Retentions, but he was traded to five-time IPL winning team.

On the captaincy switch, Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians Global Head of Performance, said “It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.”

With Hardik taking over the captaincy reins for Mumbai Indians for the upcoming IPL season, Rohit Sharma’s 10-year stint as a skipper has officially comes to an end. He is one of the most successful IPL captains, with joint-record of five titles. Hardik Pandya will lead the side with whom he started his IPL career.

Rohit, who captained MI for 158 matches across 11 seasons led the side to 87 wins including five titles. 29-year-old Hardik Pandya was first bought by Mumbai Indians at IPL Auction 2015 and played seven seasons from 2015 to 2021 before moved Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2022.
