Haryana govt lifts restrictions on Mobile internet services in seven districts amid farmers protest

Chandigarh: The Manohar Lal Khattar-led Haryana government on Sunday lifted the ban on mobile internet services in seven districts – Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa districts. Earlier, the authorities extended the ban on mobile internet and bulk SMS services in seven districts till February 24 as the stalemate between farmer leaders and the Centre continued.

The decision, initially imposed after protests on February 13, aims to prevent the spread of inflammatory content and false rumours. Which can disrupt public order.

To maintain law and order, the ban on mobile internet and bulk SMS services has been extended till February 24 in seven districts. Telecom service providers have been directed to comply with the order. This decision has come in the wake of the farmers’ Delhi Chalo movement, which has led to a serious and tense situation in the affected districts.

​This order has been issued under Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. According to the order, suspension of mobile internet services, bulk SMS (except banking and mobile recharge) and all dongle services provided on mobile networks (except voice calls) has been extended till February 23 in the jurisdiction of seven districts. The suspension has been extended several times before, i.e. on February 13. , 15, 17, 19 and 20. The order has been extended to prevent any disturbance to peace and public order in the districts.

The Haryana government has taken this step to prevent misuse of internet services to spread inflammatory content and false rumours. However, essential services like voice calls, personal SMS, mobile recharge and banking SMS have been exempted from the order.
