Haryana Roadways employees strike following the tragic death of a fellow driver

In response to the tragic killing of Haryana Roadways bus driver Rajveer in Ambala, employees staged a strike on Wednesday, causing significant disruptions for passengers on the occasion of Bhai Dooj. The strike, initiated at midnight on Tuesday, aimed to demand the arrest of the assailants and compensation for the victim’s family.

Rajveer, 51, succumbed to injuries sustained in an attack by unidentified assailants on Sunday night while on parking duty at the Ambala Cantonment Bus Stand. The attackers, reportedly four to five individuals in a car, assaulted him following an argument. Despite efforts to save him, Rajveer passed away during treatment at PGIMER in Chandigarh.

The strike came to an end on Wednesday night following discussions between the employees’ representatives and Haryana Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma in Chandigarh. Minister Sharma assured that normal services would resume immediately.

During the strike, the protesting employees held dharnas at various bus stands across the state, demanding the arrest of the assailants, a compensation of ₹50 lakh for Rajveer’s family, and a government job for one of his family members. The strike left passengers stranded, forcing many to rely on private operators for transportation.

In a meeting with the Haryana Roadways Employees Sanjha Union, Minister Sharma announced that the government would provide a job to the driver’s son based on his qualifications and offer financial assistance to the family. He also confirmed the arrest of the accused in the case.

As a result of the strike, numerous passengers faced inconvenience at bus stands, with some resorting to private taxis at exorbitant rates. The disruption prompted calls for justice, compensation, and increased security for public transport personnel. The deceased driver’s remains will be taken to his native village for the final rites on Thursday morning.
