After being repeatedly denied bail by lower courts, the Kerala-based journalist was charged under the strict Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and has been behind bars since October 2020.

He was detained along with three other people on suspicion of disturbing the peace, but he was eventually charged with sedition and violating the UAPA and Information Technology Act, two anti-terror laws.

The court ordered that Kappan be brought to the trial court within three days and be released on bail on conditions that it deems fit.

The court has imposed several conditions on Kappan

He has to stay within the jurisdiction of the Jangpura Police in Delhi.

He can’t leave the jurisdiction of Delhi without the permission of the trial court.

He needs to record his presence at the local police station every Monday.

This condition will remain applicable for the first six weeks. After that, he can move to his home state of Kerala, but he has to inform the local police station every Monday.

He will not have to misuse the liberty granted to him by the court.

Siddique Kappan and his alleged friend were arrested on the suspicion of having links with the Popular Front of India (PFI) on October 5, 2020, when they were on their way to Hathras village in Uttar Pradesh, where a rape incident took place with a young Dalit woman. She died after allegedly being gang-raped.
