Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Normal Life in Tamil Nadu; Schools Closed in Nilgiris District

Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall has battered parts of Tamil Nadu, leading to landslides and mudslides in at least 10 locations on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam National Highway and Kothagiri-Mettupalayam Highway in the Nilgiris district.

Schools in Coonoor and Kotagiri regions have been closed due to incessant rainfall.

Restoration Efforts:

Restoration work is underway in the affected areas, with multiple teams deployed to address landslides and mudslides caused by heavy rain.

Weather Impact:

Heavy rainfall has been reported in various parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Coonoor, Kothagiri, and Thoothukudi.

Waterlogging has been observed in several regions, disrupting normal life.
School Closures:

Nilgiris district collector M Aruna declared a holiday for government and private schools in Coonoor and Kotagiri due to the persistent heavy showers.

Meteorological Warning:

The Regional Meteorological Department in Chennai issued a light to moderate rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu districts and Puducherry for the next three days.
Heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, including Nilgiris and Coimbatore.

Meteorological Department Update:

Chennai Regional Meteorological Department director Balachandran stated that heavy rainfall was witnessed in many places in the last 24 hours.

About 45 places recorded heavy rainfall, 8 places recorded very heavy rainfall, and 2 places recorded extremely heavy rainfall in the state.

The forecast indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall in specific districts over the coming days.

District-wise Holiday Declarations:

District collectors in Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Pudhukottai, Nilgiri, Theni, Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Thoothukudi declared holidays for government and private schools on Thursday due to the weather conditions.

The continuous heavy rainfall has prompted authorities to take precautionary measures, including school closures and the deployment of teams for restoration work. The Meteorological Department’s warnings underline the need for residents to stay vigilant in the affected regions.
