Shimla: At least five people were killed and over a dozen others were missing in separate incidents of flash floods in Himachal Pradesh. The flood has created havoc in the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand, where a cloudburst took place in a village in Dehradun district in the wee hours of Saturday amid downpour in the area.
Local people in Sarkhet village reported the cloudburst at 2:45 am. The State Disaster Response Force or SDRF team hurried to the area after SDRF said all stranded villagers were rescued while others sought refuge in a nearby resort.
In Mandi district, a landslide and flash flood brought on by heavy rains resulted in the death of a girl and 13 others were feared dead. Three people were killed in Chamba after their house collapsed following a landslide.
Several families had to leave their houses located between Baghi and Old Katola areas due to a cloud burst and took refuge at safe places, as stated by the state disaster management department.
Deputy Commissioner Arindam Chaudhary said that schools in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district will remain shut on Saturday because of heavy rain.
The Mandi area has been witnessing heavy rains for the past two days and it is expected that rain will continue for the next 24 hours. It has been decided that all government and private educational institutions (except colleges and ITI) will remain closed on August 20, he said in the order issued on Friday evening.
