Hezbollah, which has been led by its Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah since 1992, is credited with being one of the first Islamic resistance organisations in the Middle East to employ a number of strategies, including suicide bombing, assassination, the capture of foreign soldiers, murder, and hijacking.

Along with Hezbollah, the Islamic movement Hamas also fired into the air to celebrate the attack, while throughout the West Bank, cars honked and fireworks were shot.

On Friday, during the Jewish Sabbath, a Palestinian gunman opened fire and killed seven people in front of an east Jerusalem synagogue, setting off a wave of violence.

Israel’s police chief, Kobi Shabtai, claims that the shooting was “one of the deadliest attacks we have encountered in recent years,” reported the news agency AFP.

The gunman, identified as a 21-year-old Palestinian who lives in east Jerusalem, attempted to flee the scene in a car, but police quickly tracked him. According to the AP, he was killed after a gunfight with the police.

Notably, no organisation has so far made a formal claim of responsibility for the attack.

The attack occurred one month after the formation of a new government in Israel, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and following a significant increase in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
