Shimla/Mandi: Tragedy strikes after Four women and the driver of their SUV were killed, while six others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in skidded and plunges into a gorge near Alsindi of Mandi district on Friday afternoon. The occurrence occurred on the Karsog-Shimla highway, about 90km from the district headquarters, on the border of Mandi and Shimla districts.
The vehicle onboarded 10 women passengers was on its way from Jasal to Bhalindi when the accident happened. They were scheduled to attend a camp organised by the agriculture department later.
Four of the victims were women while the fifth was the driver of vehicle, sources said. The deceased were identified as Hari Krishan, the driver, his wife Suraksha Devi besides three other women, Lata Devi, Kaura Devi, and Kalu Devi. They belonged to the nearby villages of Jassal, Bandli and Shakrindi.
State public works department (PWD) minister Vikramaditya Singh was passing through the area when the accident occurred. The injured have been rushed to the hospital at Sunni, police said.
Villagers heard a sound when the accident happened and rushed towards the spot. They found the wreckage of the vehicle, and started the rescue operation and informed the police. Police said the cause of accident is to be ascertained.
In a statement issued here, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief over the accident and ordered the concerned authorities to provide all possible assistance to the family members of the deceased
Police has registered a case and probe into the matter is underway.
