Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Himachal Pradesh Ram Swaroop Sharma was found dead at his residence in Delhi on Wednesday, police said.
He was found dead by hanging, police said, adding that no suicide note was immediately recovered from the spot. The circumstances of the death are in the initial stages of investigation, Delhi Police spokesperson, said.
“It looks like a case of suicide, but we are continuing to probe. We’ll know better once we have the autopsy report and have questioned people,” he said.
An inquiry is underway and the exact cause of his death will be ascertained after a post-mortem examination, the police said.
The parliamentarian was reportedly unwell for the past few months.
The Bhartiya Janata Party cancelled its Parliamentary Party meeting, scheduled for this morning, after learning about Sharma’s death.
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were also adjourned till 1 PM after an obituary reference to Mr Sharma.
PM Modi tweeted to say that he was pained by Mr Sharma’s untimely and unfortunate demise.
“We learnt about his unfortunate death in morning. We used his work as an example for party workers. We’re extremely saddened, hope his soul rests in peace. His body is being taken for postmortem,” Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur was quoted as saying by news agency
Born at Jalpehar village in Mandi on June 10, 1958, Sharma was a two-time MP from the district. He was elected to the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019 respectively.
