Bhopal: A Hindu religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj Thursday was arrested by the Chhattisgarh police from Madhya Pradesh, over his alleged remarks against Mahatma Gandhi during an event in Raipur, an official said.
Kalicharan Maharaj, whose controversial speech at a “dharma sansad” or religious meeting in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur led to chief patron Mahant Ramsunder Das disowning the event and walking off stage in anger, was also charged with promoting enmity between communities after former mayor Pramod Dubey filed a police case.
Kalicharan was arrested by the police from a rented room near Bageshwar Dham, around 25 km away from Khajuraho town in MP, Raipur, reported.
Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel Thursday said Kalicharan will be presented before the court within 24 hours. “Kalicharan Maharaj’s family and lawyer have been informed about his arrest by Chhattisgarh police”, the CM added.
“Narottam Mishra (Madhya Pradesh Home Minister & BJP leader) should tell whether he is happy or sad about the arrest of the person who derogated Mahatma Gandhi? No rules have been violated and arrest made by Chhattisgarh police as per procedures,” Baghel further reacted to the arrest.

Three FIRs have been registered against him so far, one in Raipur on Sunday, the second one at Akola in Maharashtra on Monday and the third in Pune on Tuesday.
During the end of the two-day ‘dharma sansad’ (religious parliament) in Raipur on Sunday, Kalicharan Mahraj had allegedly used abusive words against the Mahatma Gandhi, and asked people to ‘elect a staunch Hindu leader as the head of the government in order to protect the religion’.
After the abusive speech went viral on social media, Congress leader Pramod Dubey, who also attended the religious event, filed a police case. The police have seized the video of Kalicharan making derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.
