The pages of the history of December 16 are colored with many dark and bright sides. Where we celebrate this day as Victory Day after the victory over Pakistan, it is also remembered for stigma like the Nirbhaya incident that shook the whole country. Come, let us know what else is hidden in the womb of the history of 16 December.
New Delhi: December 16 is also celebrated as Vijay Diwas. Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 16 December to mark India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. After the end of this war 93,000 Pakistani army had surrendered. India defeated Pakistan in the 1971 war, after which East Pakistan became independent, which is today known as Bangladesh.
An army plays a very vital role in the protection of the nation and its citizens. Vijay Diwas marks the anniversary of the victory India bagged against Pakistan and commemorates the formation of Bangladesh. The day is a national holiday in India that salutes that triumph over Pakistan. The joy of victory filled the country with emotions, happiness and enthusiasm. The trust of the country and its citizens in its army soldiers has strengthened over time.
This day wreaked havoc on a young woman in Delhi. On December 16, 2012, a girl student was gang-raped in a moving bus in the presence of one of her friends and both of them were thrown out of the bus in the freezing cold night. Later, the victim, who was taken to Singapore for treatment, died there. The 23-year-old victim of the case was named “Nirbhaya” and the demand for justice for her took the form of a movement in the country.
Six persons including Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh were made accused in this case. One of them was a minor. One of the accused in the case, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail after the trial began. The minor was convicted after trial and sent to a reform home. He was released in 2015 after being in a reform home for three years.
After a long legal battle, the four convicts in the case were finally hanged on March 20, 2020.
The date of December 16 is also recorded in history with the tragic incident of terrorist attack on innocent school children in Pakistan. Tehrik-e-Taliban terrorists targeted a school in Peshawar on 16 December 2014 and fired indiscriminately, killing 150 people. Of these, 134 were children.
Six terrorists entered the army school in the uniform of security forces and carried out this dastardly attack. At that time there were more than 1500 children in the school and during the attack more than 1000 children were taken out safely. The rest of the children were left stranded in the school and 134 of them lost their lives.
