DHAKA: In a tragic incident, huge fire caused by an explosion at a private container depot in southeastern Bangladesh has killed at least 16 people and injured over 450, officials said on Sunday. The fire broke out at a container facility on Saturday night at Sitakunda, 40 km (25 miles) from the port city of Chittagong, triggering multiple container explosions after a huge blast, at the site, officials said.
“So far 35 dead bodies reached the morgue here,” a police officer stationed at the state-run Chattagram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) was quoted as saying by sources.
According to officials, this incident of fire took place on Saturday night in Kadamrasul area of Sitakunda Upazila of Chittagong. Several people were burnt to death after a fire broke out at the BM Container Depot located here. Those injured in this accident have been admitted to the hospital.
According to the report of The Daily Star, several explosions occurred after the fire in the container depot, in which at least 16 people lost their lives. While hundreds of people including police and fire brigade personnel got scorched. The Dhaka Tribune quoted Red Crescent Youth Chittagong’s health and services department head Istakul Islam as saying that more than 450 people were injured in the incident, of whom at least 350 are in the CMCH.
According to Bangladesh Fire Service sources, three of their employees also died during the fire incident at the container depot. The deceased have not been identified yet. The death toll may increase. The injured are being treated in the hospital.
He urged all doctors in the district to help tackle the situation and called for emergency blood donations.
It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze. Fire service officials said they suspect it may have originated from a container of hydrogen peroxide and spread quickly to other containers.
In 2020, three people were killed after an oil tank exploded at a container depot in Chittagong`s Patenga area.
