Cambodia's parliament on Tuesday elected long-time ruler Hun Sen's eldest son as the country's new prime minister, sealing a dynastic handover of power after last month's one-sided election.
Hun Manet has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Cambodia. Cambodia’s National Assembly on Tuesday confirmed the victory of Hun Manet as prime minister for a five-year term. Hanuman Manet’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a landslide victory in the July 23 general election.
Hun Manet is a graduate of the US Military Academy West Point and holds a master’s degree from New York University and a doctorate from the University of Bristol in the UK. However, observers do not see any immediate change in policy after his father has steadily driven Cambodia closer to China in recent years, despite his Western education.
123 MPs voted
According to news agency reports, around 123 MPs unanimously voted for Hanuman Manet as the new prime minister. For information, let us tell you that there are 125 legislators in the National Assembly, including 120 from the CPP and five from the royalist Funsinpek party.
father’s place
The National Assembly also approved Hun Manet’s new cabinet members for the 2023-2028 term. Hun Manet, 45, succeeded his 71-year-old father Samdek Teko Hun Sen, who stepped down after more than 38 years in the position.
Hun Manet, who is Cambodia’s current army chief, thanked the king for his trust and said in a Telegram post that it was his life’s highest honor to serve the nation and its people.
