Strong winds can be so powerful that they become the reason for the collapse of a portion of a bridge. Yes, this verdict was given by a bureaucrat on the collapse of a bridge in Bihar. The IAS officer explained that strong winds were the reason behind the collapse of the bridge. Don’t think it is a prank; it is a fact unveiled by a senior IAS officer.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said he was amazed at the response of an IAS officer who attributed the collapse of a portion of an under-construction road bridge in Sultanganj to ‘strong winds’.

A section of an under-construction road bridge over the Ganga at Sultanganj in Bihar collapsed during a thunderstorm on April 29. There were no reports of any casualties in the incident.

“A bridge fell in Bihar on April 29. I asked my secretary about the reasons. He (the secretary) said it was on account of strong winds (hawa aur dhundh), “Mr. Gadkari said.

The road transport and highways minister said he wondered how an IAS officer could believe such an explanation.

Is it true that hawa dhundh se kaise bridge girega? Kuch naa kuch galati hogi (I cannot understand how a bridge can collapse due to strong winds. “There must be some error (which led to the collapse of the bridge”),” Mr Gadkari added.

The minister also emphasised the need to reduce the cost of bridge construction without compromising on quality

Sultanganj MLA Lalit Narayan Mandal had earlier said that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an investigation into the bridge collapse.

The use of sub-standard materials during the construction can’t be ruled out. The bridge was constructed at a cost of 1,710 crore. Despite a huge investment, the bridge collapsed due to a strong wind. What an amazing reply!

The construction of the bridge between Sultanganj and Aguani Ghat in Bihar got underway in 2014. It should be completed in 2019, but work is still going on and it is under-construction.

The 3,116-metre-long bridge, on completion, would be the country’s longest extradosed span and have a high-level observatory, from where users can view the remarkable view of the river.
