New Delhi: India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday overtook England pacer James Anderson to top the latest ICC men’s Test bowling rankings. Ashwin, who took six wickets during India’s win in the second Test in New Delhi, has gained two places. After England’s defeat against New Zealand in the Wellington Test, Anderson slipped to second place.
Ashwin earned the spot thanks to his recent performances. He took 6 wickets (3/57 & 3/59) in India’s emphatic win against Australia in the second Test of the ongoing series. After England’s close defeat against New Zealand in the Wellington Test, Anderson slipped to second place.
The 36-year-old Ashwin first achieved the honor of being the number-1 Test bowler in 2015. He has since returned to the top spot on several occasions. Three Indian players are in the top-10 in the Test bowlers’ rankings.
While Ravichandran Ashwin is at No.1, Jasprit Bumrah has gained one place. He has now reached number-4, apart from him Ravindra Jadeja is also at number-8. Ashwin took big wickets in India’s win in Delhi. He returned Marnus Labuchen and Steve Smith in the same over of the first innings. The evergreen off-spinner again took three top-five wickets in the second innings, while his spin-bowling partner Ravindra Jadeja troubled the rest of the Australian batsmen from the other end.
Ashwin has a chance to remain at No. 1 by performing brilliantly in the remaining two Tests in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia at home. Ashwin currently has 864 ratings points, while James Anderson has 859 ratings points.
