IMD predicts rain in Delhi, wet spell over northwest India, snowfall over western Himalayan region likely from today

IMD Rainfall Alert, Weather Update: Moderate rain alert has also been issued in western areas of Punjab Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, strong winds are expected on 29 and 30 January.

New Delhi: After a brief respite from the cold wave conditions, some parts of north India may see a drop in temperature in the coming days, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is going to rain once again in some states of North India including UP. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain warning for two days. Apart from this, a double attack of rain and snowfall may occur over the western Himalayan regions. It is noteworthy that in many cities of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, it is still getting cold. However, there is respite from the severe cold in states like the national capital Delhi, UP, Bihar.

According to the Meteorological Department’s warning, there may be light to heavy rains in the western Himalayan region on 29 and 30 January. Apart from this, there are chances of snowfall as well. At the same time, in these two days, an alert of moderate rain has also been issued in the western areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, strong winds are expected over the states of Northwest India on 29 and 30 January. The wind speed can be 20-30 kmph.

Cold wave prevails in Punjab, Haryana
Cold wave prevailed in Punjab and Haryana on Friday with Bathinda being the coldest place in the region. According to the report of the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in Bathinda of Punjab was 0.6 degree Celsius, which is five degrees below normal.

Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, Faridkot and Gurdaspur recorded minimum temperatures of 3.3 degrees, 6.8 degrees, 5.7 degrees, six degrees, 1.4 degrees and five degrees Celsius, respectively. The minimum temperature in Amritsar was one degree below normal. Chandigarh, the joint capital and union territory of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a minimum temperature of 6.9 degrees Celsius.

Wet spell in Himachal
A local weather station has forecast a wet spell in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh on January 29 and 30 as a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the region from today. Widespread rainfall or snowfall is very likely in the state on January 29 and 30, and light to moderate snowfall might occur in Kullu, Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti districts.

Drizzle in MP
A western disturbance, characterised by warm moist air, is likely to start impacting Madhya Pradesh from today, bringing in some light showers and cloudy weather for the next two or three days. The disturbance is also likely to push temperatures up a notch.

Rain in Delhi
Delhi, which has not received much rainfall this winter, is likely to witness a partly cloudy sky on Monday and mainly clear sky from January 31 till February 3.

The meteorological department attributed no rainfall in Delhi to the lack of strong western disturbances in November and December, PTI reported. Last year, the city recorded 82.2 mm rainfall in January, the highest in the month since 1901.

Delhi cold wave
The national capital logged eight cold wave days in January this year, the most in the month in 15 years. It saw seven cold wave days in January 2020, while it did not record any such day last year.

The city recorded two intense cold wave spells — from January 16 to January 18 and January 5 to 9, according to IMD data. It, however, did not record any cold days. Delhi has also logged over 50 hours of dense fog this month so far, the highest since 2019.
